Broken Spokes touched me on a deep level. It made me laugh, cry, and aspire to be a better person all at once. It brought back memories of how society was 50 years ago. The weight of the world was handed to a little girl, and she carried it pretty darned well. The honesty and clarity of the writing is simply unexpected and disarming. Tragedy and pain seem to bring out the best or the worst in us. It is obvious Arlene O'Neil turned to being one of the best of human beings. This book evokes smiles and tears. You become this little girl almost from the beginning. O'Neil is one of those born with a special gift. She seems to have a depth of spirit lacking in many today. She is a survivor. Broken Spokes is a touching story of survival and love. You cannot help but be touched with this writer's heartfelt retelling of her personal triumphs over insurmountable odds, coming out the other side full of love and caring not for herself, but for her friends and family and total strangers. Defeatism is not a part of this strong woman's vocabulary! The reader gains strength through the author's words. I very much look forward to other books written by this charismatic writer!
